St. Andrew Kim Scholarship

This is an annual scholarship with a total of approximately $25,000 available to be awarded annually.

The scholarship committee will accept applications until September 30, 2019 and the scholarship will be
awarded at a luncheon on November 23, 2019 and during 10am Mass at St.Andrew Kim Parish on
November 24, 2019.

The scholarship is only available to the parishioners of St. Andrew Kim Parish of Toronto and Sacred
Heart of Jesus Parish of Toronto.

The amount of scholarship will be awarded as follows: 70% approximately to St. Andrew Kim and 30%
approximately to Sacred Hear of Jesus Parish. These amounts can be adjusted by the scholarship
committee at their discretion.

The Scholarship Committee will be comprised of minimum 3 to a maximum of 5 non-salaried volunteers
from St.Andrew Kim Parish and a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 2 non-salaried volunteer(s) from
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. The appointment of a scholarship committee member will require the
approval of the Board of the Korean Catholic Church Credit Union and the Pastor of St.Andrew Kim
parish.

The scholarship will be awarded in the following categories. Applying for the scholarship does not
guarantee acceptance and the recipients of the scholarship will be carefully selected by the Scholarship
Committee. Furthermore, the priority for the awarding of the scholarship will be as follows using the
following guidelines:

1. Seminarian Recognition Award-Separate Application will be emailed to Seminarians

  • This Award is granted to all permanent diaconate candidates, and seminarians enrolled at
    a seminary of the Archdiocese of Toronto for formation to ordination as priests and
    deacons.
  • The amount of the award will be $1,000 or as adjusted by the Scholarship Committee.

2. High School Award of Excellence

  • This Award is available to all high school students who
    • Have demonstrated community leadership especially at their parish and/or
    • Have a minimum overall grade average of 80% in their most recently
      completed school year
  • The amount of the award will be $1,000 or as adjusted by the Scholarship Committee.

3. Post-Secondary School Award of Excellence

  • This Award is available to all post-secondary students who
    • Have demonstrated community leadership especially at their parish and/or
    • Have a minimum overall grade average of B (or equivalent) in their most
      recently completed school year
  • The amount of the award will be $1,000 or as adjusted by the Scholarship Committee.

The general application process will be as follows:

1. Write a 250-word essay describing your community leadership experience. Your essay
should tell us, for example (but not limited to)

  • Why you got involved
  • How your involvement shows initiative and innovation
  • The ways your efforts have strengthened others
  • How long you have been involved
  • What you think the long-term impact will be
  • How your community has affected you

2. Tell us in 100-words about the other great things you’re doing that the scholarship
committee should consider

  • Reference letters of support from community groups or volunteer agencies
  • Your most recent academic transcript
